Handsome Furs “I’m Confused”

Handsome Furs are delivering Face Control, their sophomore record, on SubPop Records on February 3rd.  In the mean time, they’re teasing us with “I’m Confused,” an infectious, stripped down track that bodes well for the album’s eleven other tracks.  A duo hasn’t sounded this good since, um, Hall & Oates.

Peasant “Exposure”

This is one of two tracks this week that comes to us from Paper Garden Records, a new favorite of ours.  Peasant is the work of one Damien DeRose, who crafts songs so fragile we almost fear that our listening itself will be enough to crush them.  Excellent, gorgeous music for fans of the Parasol Records school of intimate indie-pop.

Julie Doiron “Consolation Prize”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Throughout her career, indie starlet Julie Doiron has kept it interesting for her fans, from the hushed French pageantry of Desmorais to the foot stomping of her upcoming March release, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day.  “Consolation Prize” is a firecracker of a tune, practically over before it begins but sweet the whole way through.  Definitely “repeat” worthy.

Mazes “I Have Laid in the Darkness”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We’ve already heaped praise on The 1900s, so it makes sense that we’d pour some loving on Mazes, a side-project featuring three members of the band.  Their self-titled debut is due out in early March; in the interim, enjoy “I Have Laid in the Darkness,” a great track reminiscent of wonders like Mazzy Star and Mojave 3.

Roger O’Donnell “Tiny Pieces of You”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Cure keyboardist Roger O’Donnell just released his second solo record, a luscious, meditative collection of electronic-based atmospherics.  It’s a superb album and the perfect backdrop to getting lost in your daydreams.

Emanuel and the Fear “The Rain Becomes the Clouds”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As promised, here’s the second nod this week for Paper Garden Records, this time for Emanuel and the Fear.  A great band name, a great song, a great head of hair (don’t you agree?).  Soulful and soaring, this track is a promising glimpse of the band’s upcoming debut full-length.

Faunts “Feel.Love.Thinking.Of”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Speaking of bands we’ve loved on before, Faunts are back with a new record due to drop in February.  This is the title track from said record–more of the impeccable post-shoegaze we’ve come to expect from these fellas.
